The Rain Bird 1812-SAM is a tall pop-up spray body from the proven Rain Bird 1800 Series, combining a 30.5 cm (12-inch) pop-up height with an integrated Seal-A-Matic™ check valve. This makes the sprinkler particularly suitable for planting beds, ground cover, taller grasses and other landscaped areas where the nozzle needs to rise well above the surrounding vegetation. At the same time, the integrated check valve helps prevent unwanted drainage through sprinklers installed at lower elevations.

The Seal-A-Matic™ check valve can hold back water with elevation differences of up to 4.2 m (14 feet). This is particularly useful on slopes, hillsides and landscaped areas with varying ground levels. When the irrigation zone shuts down, water remains in the lateral pipe instead of draining through the lowest sprinkler. This helps reduce unnecessary water loss, puddling and erosion around lower sprinkler locations.

With its large 30.5 cm pop-up height, the Rain Bird 1812-SAM raises the installed nozzle well above the surrounding vegetation. During irrigation, water pressure raises the stem from the sprinkler body, allowing the nozzle to distribute water effectively even in areas with taller plants. When watering stops, a strong retract spring reliably returns the stem into the body.

The Rain Bird 1812-SAM is supplied without a nozzle. This allows you to select a suitable Rain Bird spray or rotary nozzle according to your irrigation plan. The selected nozzle determines factors such as throw distance, watering pattern and water distribution, allowing the sprinkler body to be adapted to a wide range of landscaped areas.

Like other models in the Rain Bird 1800 Series, the 1812-SAM features a pressure-activated wiper seal that supports reliable stem operation and helps protect the mechanism against dirt and debris. The durable UV-resistant plastic body and corrosion-resistant stainless steel components are designed for dependable long-term outdoor use. Important components are accessible from the top for convenient flushing and maintenance.

The Rain Bird 1812-SAM is particularly useful when both a check valve and a very large pop-up height are required. The 1804-SAM provides a 10.2 cm pop-up height and the 1806-SAM provides 15.2 cm. With its 30.5 cm pop-up height, the 1812-SAM raises the nozzle significantly higher, making it especially suitable for planting beds and taller vegetation in irrigation systems with elevation changes.

Seal-A-Matic check valve for sloping areas

The integrated Seal-A-Matic™ check valve is the key difference between the Rain Bird 1812-SAM and the standard 1812. When an irrigation zone shuts down, the valve helps prevent water in higher sections of the lateral pipe from draining through sprinklers installed at lower elevations.

The SAM valve can accommodate elevation differences of up to 4.2 m. This helps reduce water loss, puddling and erosion at lower points in the irrigation zone and eliminates the need for a separate under-the-head check valve for this function.

Compatible nozzles for the Rain Bird 1812-SAM

The Rain Bird 1812-SAM can be combined with a variety of Rain Bird spray and rotary nozzles. The appropriate nozzle can be selected according to the required throw distance, watering pattern and size of the irrigation area. This makes the tall spray body suitable for many different planting beds and landscaped areas.

The nozzle is sold separately and is not included with the Rain Bird 1812-SAM.

Installation and use

The Rain Bird 1812-SAM is designed for permanent installation in the ground, with the top of the sprinkler approximately level with the surrounding surface. The SAM version uses the 1/2-inch female threaded bottom inlet. A suitable flexible pipe or swing joint can be used to provide a flexible connection to the underground irrigation pipe.

Due to its large 30.5 cm pop-up height, the 1812-SAM is particularly suitable for planting beds, taller grasses, ground cover and other areas with higher vegetation. It is also especially useful at lower points within an irrigation zone, where the integrated SAM check valve helps prevent unwanted low-head drainage.
