Pressure gauges for irrigation systems
A pressure gauge is a practical measuring instrument for planning, commissioning and checking your irrigation system. It shows the water pressure at a specific point in the system, helping you determine whether pop-up sprinklers, sprays, drip irrigation and other components are operating under suitable conditions.
Correct water pressure is important for even irrigation. If the pressure is too low, sprinklers may not achieve their intended radius. Excessive pressure can also cause problems depending on the system. A pressure gauge allows you to check the pressure and make better decisions when planning and adjusting your irrigation system.
Measure water pressure correctly
Depending on its design, a pressure gauge can be connected to a suitable point at the water supply or within the irrigation system. Make sure the measuring range, connection and design of the gauge are suitable for the intended application. Irrigation pressure is commonly displayed in bar or psi.
When measuring pressure, consider the difference between static and dynamic pressure. Pressure with no water flowing can be considerably higher than the pressure available while the irrigation system is operating. For sprinkler planning, the available pressure at the required water flow is particularly important.
Check sprinklers and drip irrigation
Pop-up rotors and sprays require suitable operating pressure so that sprinklers and nozzles can perform as intended. A pressure measurement helps you check whether sufficient pressure is available in the irrigation zone. The required flow of all sprinklers operating simultaneously should also be considered.
Water pressure is also important for drip and micro irrigation. Depending on the drippers or micro sprinklers being used, a pressure regulator may be required. A pressure gauge helps you check the available pressure, but it does not regulate pressure itself and should not be confused with a pressure regulator.
Find irrigation problems more easily
A pressure gauge is also useful for troubleshooting. If sprinklers suddenly have a shorter radius or an irrigation zone no longer performs as expected, measuring the pressure can provide useful information. Possible causes may include changes in the water supply, filters, valves or pipework.
You can check pressure at different points in the irrigation system and compare the measured values. Together with checking filters, solenoid valves, pipes and sprinklers, this can help you identify possible causes systematically. A pressure gauge is therefore a useful accessory for both irrigation installation and maintenance.
