Battery-powered irrigation controllers
Battery-powered irrigation controllers are ideal when you want to automate an irrigation system but do not have a mains power connection at the installation location. Power is supplied by batteries, so there is no need to run a mains cable to the controller. This provides greater flexibility when planning garden irrigation.
Typical applications include valve boxes, remote garden areas, landscaped spaces and irrigation systems installed at a later date. Depending on the model, the controller can be positioned close to the solenoid valves. Always follow the manufacturer's requirements for installation, power supply and operating environment.
Control irrigation from the valve box
Depending on the design, a battery-powered controller can operate one or several irrigation zones. This allows pop-up sprinklers for lawns, dripline along hedges or irrigation for garden beds to operate automatically without requiring a conventional mains-powered irrigation controller.
Installing the controller close to the solenoid valves can keep the required control wiring short. This can make automatic irrigation easier to add to an existing garden. Before choosing a controller, check how many stations you need and whether the model is suitable for your intended installation location.
Use compatible 9 V solenoids
Battery-powered irrigation controllers commonly operate with compatible 9 V latching solenoids. These require only a short electrical pulse to change their switching state, making them suitable for battery-powered systems. The controller, solenoid and valve must be compatible with each other.
A conventional 24 V irrigation valve therefore cannot automatically be used with every battery controller. Depending on the valve, it may be possible to replace the existing solenoid with a compatible 9 V version. Always check the manufacturer's specifications before combining individual components.
Add automatic irrigation without mains power
A battery-powered controller allows you to add automatic irrigation in locations where installing a mains power cable would be difficult. Once programmed, the controller follows the selected watering schedules and operates the connected solenoid valves automatically.
Depending on the model, compatible sensors or additional control functions may also be available. Check the battery level regularly and replace batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions. With suitable solenoid valves, control wiring and a valve box, you can build a compact automatic irrigation system without mains power.
