Control two irrigation zones without mains power
The Rain Bird ESP-9V 2-zone controller allows you to automate two separate irrigation areas even when no mains power supply is available at the installation location. The compact battery-operated controller is ideal for gardens, lawns, flower beds, hedges and drip irrigation systems where the irrigation valves are installed remotely, for example inside an underground valve box.
Both irrigation zones can be programmed independently. For example, zone 1 can operate lawn sprinklers in the morning while zone 2 controls drip irrigation for hedges or flower beds at a completely different time. Run times, start times and watering days can be individually configured for each zone.
Because the ESP-9V operates with standard 9V alkaline batteries, there is no need to install a mains power cable to the valve box. This makes it particularly useful for existing irrigation systems, system extensions and remote garden areas where installing electrical power would be difficult or expensive.
Easy installation close to the irrigation valves
The ESP-9V can be installed directly near the irrigation valves without requiring a 230V mains connection. You only need one or two 9V alkaline batteries and compatible irrigation valves equipped with 9V DC latching solenoids.
The two irrigation valves are connected to the corresponding controller wires. Suitable waterproof wire connectors should be used for permanent installation inside a valve box to protect electrical connections against moisture and corrosion.
Standard 24V AC solenoids cannot be operated directly by this controller. If compatible Rain Bird valves are already installed, it may be possible to replace their existing 24V solenoids with suitable 9V latching solenoids.
Individual programming for each irrigation zone
A major advantage of the 2-zone version is independent programming. Both areas do not have to irrigate at the same time or for the same duration. Run times, start times and watering days can be configured separately according to the actual water requirements of each area.
Up to six independent start times are available for each zone. Run time can be programmed from 1 to 240 minutes, allowing the ESP-9V to handle both short sprinkler cycles and longer watering periods for drip irrigation systems.
Watering days are equally flexible. You can select specific days of the week, use a cyclic schedule from every 1 to 30 days or choose odd or even calendar days.
Automatic sequencing of both zones
The 2-zone ESP-9V automatically sequences irrigation zones so that only one valve operates at a time. If programmed watering periods overlap, the controller automatically runs the zones one after another.
For example, if both zones are programmed to start at 6:00 a.m., the controller begins with the lower-numbered zone. Once that watering cycle has finished, the next zone starts automatically. This eliminates the need to manually calculate separate start times to prevent the irrigation circuits from overlapping.
Contractor Rapid Programming™ also simplifies initial setup by copying start times and watering days from zone 1 to the remaining zone, after which the settings can be individually adjusted.
Manual watering and seasonal adjustment
Watering can also be started outside the automatic schedule. The dedicated manual watering function allows you to operate an individual zone or all zones without changing the stored irrigation program.
A global seasonal adjustment from 10 to 200 percent allows watering duration to be increased or reduced without individually reprogramming every run time. This makes it easy to adapt irrigation to seasonal changes in temperature and rainfall.
Automatic irrigation can also be delayed for 1 to 9 days after rainfall or whenever watering is temporarily unnecessary. Once the selected delay has expired, the controller automatically returns to its normal schedule.
Rain sensor, master valve and pump start
The ESP-9V includes a sensor input for connecting a compatible rain sensor. A sensor bypass function allows the sensor input to be overridden when required.
The 2-zone version also provides a master valve/pump-start circuit, a feature available on multi-zone ESP-9V controllers. This provides additional flexibility when designing more advanced irrigation installations.
IP68 waterproof housing for valve box installation
Battery-operated controllers are frequently installed directly in the garden, making enclosure quality particularly important. Rain Bird therefore designed the ESP-9V for demanding outdoor environments. Its enclosure is IP68 certified for protection against dust and water intrusion.
A dual-sealed battery compartment provides additional protection against moisture, dirt and debris. The controller housing is also designed for excellent resistance to weathering, ageing and yellowing, making the ESP-9V particularly suitable for installation inside an irrigation valve box.
Long operating life with standard 9V batteries
The controller can operate with one or two 9V alkaline batteries. Rain Bird specifies approximately one year of operation with one battery and more than two years under normal conditions when two 9V alkaline batteries are installed.
The irrigation schedule is protected by non-volatile memory. This means your programmed settings remain stored if the batteries become depleted or need to be replaced.
No Wi-Fi or app required
The Rain Bird ESP-9V 2-zone controller is designed as an independent battery-operated irrigation controller. It does not include Wi-Fi and is not controlled through the Rain Bird 2.0 app. Programming is performed directly on the controller using the large LCD display and control buttons.
This allows the controller to operate independently of Wi-Fi, internet access and smartphones. Once programmed, the ESP-9V automatically manages both irrigation zones even in remote parts of the garden.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-9V 2-zone controller
What can I control with two zones?
You can control two independent irrigation valves and therefore two separate watering areas. For example, zone 1 can operate lawn sprinklers while zone 2 supplies drip irrigation for hedges or flower beds.
Can each zone have a different watering schedule?
Yes. Run times, start times and watering days can be programmed individually for each zone, making it easy to irrigate areas with different water requirements.
Can both valves operate at the same time?
No. The ESP-9V automatically sequences the zones. If programmed watering periods overlap, the lower-numbered zone operates first and the next zone starts afterwards.
Can I install the ESP-9V myself?
Installation is comparatively straightforward because no 230V mains connection is required. The controller outputs are connected to compatible 9V latching solenoids. Waterproof wire connectors should be used for outdoor installations and Rain Bird's installation instructions should always be followed.
Can I use standard 24V irrigation valves?
A valve fitted with a standard 24V AC solenoid cannot be controlled directly by the ESP-9V. On suitable valves, the existing solenoid may be replaced with a compatible 9V latching solenoid.
Can I connect a rain sensor?
Yes. The controller provides a sensor input for a compatible rain sensor together with a sensor bypass function.
Does the 2-zone version support a master valve or pump start?
Yes. Multi-zone ESP-9V controllers include a master valve/pump-start circuit. For pump installations, the electrical requirements of the pump and any necessary external relay must also be considered.
Can the controller be installed inside a valve box?
Yes. Its IP68-certified enclosure and dual-sealed battery compartment are designed for demanding environments such as irrigation valve boxes.
Will the irrigation program be lost when the batteries are replaced?
No. The non-volatile memory retains the programmed irrigation schedule when the batteries are depleted or replaced.
Does the ESP-9V have Wi-Fi?
No. The ESP-9V does not include Wi-Fi and does not require an internet connection for automatic operation.
Can I use the Rain Bird 2.0 app?
No. The ESP-9V is programmed directly on the controller and is not designed for control through the Rain Bird 2.0 app.
