Solenoid valves for automatic garden irrigation
Solenoid valves perform a central function in an automatic garden irrigation system. They open and close the water supply to individual irrigation zones and are operated by an irrigation controller. This means you do not have to manually turn the water supply for lawns, beds or hedges on and off every time you irrigate.
A home garden irrigation system is often divided into several separate zones. One solenoid valve can operate the pop-up sprinklers for a lawn, while additional valves supply dripline or micro irrigation. This allows different garden areas to be watered independently according to their requirements.
Choose 24 V or 9 V solenoid valves
Conventional irrigation systems with a permanently installed controller commonly use valves with 24 V solenoids. They are connected to the irrigation controller using suitable control cable. When a station is activated, the controller operates the corresponding valve and starts the selected irrigation zone.
Battery-powered controllers use compatible 9 V latching solenoids depending on the system. This solution is particularly useful where a mains-powered controller cannot easily be installed. Always make sure that the irrigation valve, solenoid and controller are technically compatible with each other.
Install solenoid valves in a valve box
In home gardens, several solenoid valves are often installed together inside a valve box. The box is installed in the ground and helps protect the valves while keeping them accessible from above for maintenance and adjustments. Multiple valves can therefore be organised conveniently in one location.
Suitable valve fittings and PE pipe connectors can be used to connect the valves to the main supply pipe and individual irrigation zones. Check the required thread sizes, flow direction and technical specifications of each valve. After installation, test all connections carefully for leaks under operating pressure.
Build your own automatic garden irrigation
Start by deciding which areas of the garden should be watered separately. Lawns with pop-up sprinklers, drip irrigation for hedges and garden beds may require different flow rates and watering schedules. Dividing these areas between several solenoid valves allows them to be controlled independently.
With solenoid valves, a suitable valve box, control cables and an irrigation controller, you can build the automatic control system for your garden irrigation yourself. Depending on the system, rain sensors or other sensors can also be added to create convenient automatic irrigation tailored to your garden.
