Mains-powered irrigation controllers
Mains-powered irrigation controllers form the central control unit of a conventional automatic irrigation system. Their permanent power supply allows watering programs to run reliably and multiple irrigation zones to be controlled automatically. Lawns, beds, hedges and drip irrigation areas can therefore be watered separately.
Depending on the model, controllers are designed for installation indoors or outdoors in a suitable enclosure. When choosing a controller, consider the number of stations, intended installation location and required power supply. Installation must follow the manufacturer's instructions and applicable electrical requirements.
Control 24 V solenoid valves automatically
Many mains-powered irrigation controllers operate with conventional 24 V solenoid valves. The controller sends the required electrical signal through control cables to the solenoids, automatically opening and closing the individual irrigation zones. This eliminates the need to manually switch the water supply for different garden areas.
In a typical installation, multi-core control cable runs from the controller to the solenoid valves in the valve box. A common wire and individual station wires allow each irrigation zone to be controlled separately. Make sure the controller, solenoids and other electrical components are compatible.
Program multiple irrigation zones
Irrigation controllers are available with different numbers of stations depending on the model. You can create separate zones for pop-up sprinklers on the lawn, dripline along a hedge and irrigation for vegetable beds. Individual watering schedules can then be programmed according to the functions provided by the controller.
Consider possible future extensions when choosing the number of stations. Some controllers can be expanded with additional station modules. This allows you to start with a smaller number of irrigation zones and expand your automatic garden irrigation later without necessarily replacing the complete controller.
Add sensors and WiFi functions
Many mains-powered controllers provide connections for compatible rain sensors, soil moisture sensors or other sensors. Depending on the system, this information can help adapt automatic watering to conditions in the garden. The available sensor functions depend on the selected irrigation controller.
Compatible models may also provide integrated network connectivity or support an optional WiFi module. Depending on the system, watering programs can then be managed using a smartphone, tablet or computer. With solenoid valves, sensors and suitable controller accessories, you can build your automatic irrigation system step by step.
