Wi-Fi module and sensors for this irrigation controller:
Four-zone irrigation control for outdoor installation
The Rain Bird ESP-TM2-4-230V is a reliable irrigation controller designed to operate up to four independent watering zones. This version features a protective wall-mounted enclosure for indoor or outdoor installation and is particularly suitable for automatic residential garden irrigation systems.
Four stations allow the garden to be divided into separate irrigation areas. A front garden, lawn, flower beds and drip irrigation can each be controlled through individual irrigation valves and programmed according to their different watering requirements.
The ESP-TM2 operates fully automatically without Wi-Fi or internet access. If smartphone and remote control are required later, the controller can be upgraded with the separately available Rain Bird LNK2 WiFi module.
Protective enclosure for outdoor installation
Unlike the compact indoor-only version, the ESP-TM2-4-230V features a plastic wall-mounted enclosure with a protective door. Rain Bird officially lists this version as an outdoor model and specifies an IP24 protection rating.
The enclosure measures approximately 20.0 cm high, 20.1 cm wide and 9.0 cm deep. Rain Bird specifies a maximum operating temperature of 65°C for the outdoor versions.
Simple programming directly at the controller
The ESP-TM2 is designed for straightforward everyday operation. Its backlit display, central dial and clearly arranged function buttons make irrigation programming easy directly at the controller.
Set the required watering days, start times and station run times and the ESP-TM2 automatically carries out the stored schedules. Wi-Fi, a smartphone or internet connection is not required for normal automatic operation.
Individual stations, complete programs or all stations can also be operated manually, making system testing and maintenance straightforward.
Four independent irrigation circuits
The four stations allow up to four separate irrigation circuits to be controlled. Each station normally operates one 24V AC irrigation valve that opens and closes the water supply to the corresponding garden area.
More than one sprinkler can be connected downstream of each valve. The possible number of sprinklers depends on available water pressure, flow and the combined water demand within the zone.
Three independent watering programs
The ESP-TM2 provides three independent irrigation programs with up to four start times available for each program.
Station run times can be programmed from 1 minute up to 6 hours, making the controller suitable for conventional lawn sprinklers as well as irrigation systems requiring longer operating times.
Flexible watering schedules
Watering can be programmed using selected weekdays, odd or even calendar days or cyclic schedules. Permanent no-water days can also be defined.
A watering delay of up to 14 days allows automatic irrigation to be temporarily suspended without deleting or rebuilding the stored watering programs.
Seasonal adjustment from 5 to 200%
Seasonal adjustment allows programmed watering durations to be reduced or increased between 5 and 200% as conditions change throughout the irrigation season.
This makes it possible to adjust overall watering without manually changing every individual station run time.
Designed for 24V AC irrigation valves
The ESP-TM2-4-230V controls conventional 24V AC irrigation valves commonly used in permanently installed garden irrigation systems.
In a typical installation, one control wire from each valve connects to its corresponding station terminal while the second valve wires share the common connection to the controller's COM terminal.
Suitable examples include appropriate 24V versions of Rain Bird HV, DV, DVF, PGA and PEB valves. Battery-operated 9V DC latching solenoids cannot be connected directly.
230V supply with 24V valve control
The 230V designation refers to the controller's mains power supply. The connected irrigation valves themselves are controlled using 24V AC.
Rain Bird specifies a maximum output of 1A at 24V AC for the outdoor versions, compared with 0.65A for the compact indoor-only models.
Rain sensor integration
A compatible rain or rain/freeze sensor can be connected directly to the ESP-TM2. Automatic irrigation can then be suspended when natural rainfall makes watering unnecessary.
Sensor bypass can be configured by station, allowing selected irrigation circuits to continue operating independently of the connected sensor.
Master valve and pump-start support
The ESP-TM2 supports a master valve or pump-start relay in addition to its four irrigation stations. Master valve operation can be enabled or disabled for individual stations.
An irrigation pump is not powered directly from the controller's valve output. A suitable external pump-start relay or pump control system is required.
Upgrade to Wi-Fi with LNK2
The ESP-TM2-4-230V does not include built-in Wi-Fi. However, it is designed for an optional Wi-Fi upgrade using the separately available Rain Bird LNK2 WiFi module.
The LNK2 plugs directly into the dedicated accessory port, allowing smartphone and network functionality to be added without replacing the complete irrigation controller.
Smartphone and remote control
With the LNK2 WiFi module installed, supported irrigation functions can be managed from a compatible smartphone. When an internet connection is available, remote access to the irrigation controller is also possible.
The LNK2 requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and does not support a network operating exclusively at 5 GHz.
Irrigation continues without Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is not required for the execution of stored irrigation schedules. Programs are stored locally in the ESP-TM2 and are carried out directly by the controller.
If Wi-Fi or internet access is temporarily unavailable, normal automatic irrigation continues. Only remote and internet-dependent functions are unavailable until connectivity is restored.
Nonvolatile memory permanently retains the programming, while an internal lithium battery maintains the controller's date and time during power outages.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-TM2-4-230V
Can the ESP-TM2-4-230V be installed outdoors?
Yes. The TM2-4-230V is the outdoor version of the ESP-TM2. Rain Bird equips the outdoor models with a plastic wall-mounted enclosure with a door and specifies an IP24 protection rating.
What is the difference between TM2-4-230V and TM2I4-230V?
The TM2-4-230V uses the larger protective enclosure intended for indoor or outdoor installation. The TM2I4-230V is the compact indoor-only version.
What do four zones mean?
The controller can operate up to four separate irrigation circuits. Each station normally controls one 24V AC irrigation valve.
Can several sprinklers operate on one zone?
Yes. Multiple sprinklers can operate downstream of one valve provided that available water pressure and flow are sufficient for their combined demand.
Which irrigation valves can I use?
The ESP-TM2 is designed for valves equipped with 24V AC solenoids, including suitable versions of Rain Bird HV, DV, DVF, PGA and PEB valves.
Can I use 9V irrigation valves?
No. Battery-operated 9V DC latching solenoids cannot be connected directly to the ESP-TM2.
Does the controller include Wi-Fi?
No. Wi-Fi is not built in, but the controller can be upgraded with the separately available Rain Bird LNK2 WiFi module.
Can I control irrigation remotely?
Yes. With the LNK2 installed and an active Wi-Fi and internet connection, supported irrigation functions can be accessed remotely.
Will irrigation continue if Wi-Fi fails?
Yes. Irrigation programs are stored locally in the controller and continue to operate independently of Wi-Fi and internet access.
Can a rain sensor be connected?
Yes. The ESP-TM2 includes a sensor input and supports compatible rain and rain/freeze sensors.
Can I control an irrigation pump?
Yes. The ESP-TM2 supports a pump-start relay. The pump itself requires a suitable external relay or pump control system.
Can the four-station model be expanded later?
No. The ESP-TM2 has a fixed station capacity. If more than four irrigation circuits are required, choose a 6-, 8- or 12-station ESP-TM2 model.
