40 mm PE pipes for irrigation
PE pipes with a 40 mm diameter are a good choice for larger irrigation systems where relatively high volumes of water need to be transported. The larger pipe cross section helps limit pressure losses within the pipework and provides a reliable supply for different irrigation areas.
40 mm PE pipes can be used as main supply lines in larger gardens, landscaped areas and sprinkler systems. Individual irrigation zones for lawns, beds and other areas can branch from the main line. Whether 40 mm is the right size depends on the required flow rate, pipe length and available water pressure.
40 mm PE pipes for higher flow rates
Larger irrigation systems often require more water to pass through the main supply pipe. A correctly sized 40 mm PE pipe can help reduce pressure losses compared with smaller pipe diameters. This becomes particularly important with longer pipe runs and powerful sprinkler systems.
When selecting the pipe diameter, consider the combined water requirement of all sprinklers operating simultaneously. Pipe length, elevation differences and available inlet pressure are also important. A larger pipe does not increase the available pressure, but it can reduce pressure losses at higher flow rates.
Connect and install 40 mm PE pipes
Suitable PE compression fittings are available for 40 mm pipes. Straight connectors can extend pipe runs, elbows allow changes in direction and tees create branches. Compatible threaded fittings can also be used to connect solenoid valves, manifolds and other irrigation components.
Cut the PE pipe cleanly and as squarely as possible using a suitable pipe cutter or cutting tool for the required diameter. The pipe ends can then be installed with compatible 40 mm compression fittings. Once installation is complete, check all connections for leaks under normal operating pressure.
Plan main pipes for irrigation systems
40 mm PE pipes are particularly useful as main lines when several irrigation zones are supplied from a common water source. Suitable fittings can be used to transition to smaller pipe diameters that supply individual solenoid valves, pop-up sprinklers or other areas of the irrigation system.
The correct pipe size should always be selected according to the planned water flow. Smaller systems may only require 25 or 32 mm pipes, while 40 or 50 mm can be useful for higher flow rates. With correctly sized PE pipes and suitable fittings, you can build your irrigation system yourself.
