Wi-Fi module and sensors for this irrigation controller:
Four-zone automatic irrigation control
The Rain Bird ESP-TM2I4-230V is a mains-powered irrigation controller designed to operate up to four independent irrigation zones. This indoor version is intended for installation in a protected interior location and is ideal for automatic lawn, flower bed and drip irrigation in residential gardens.
Four stations allow the garden to be divided into separate watering areas. For example, two lawn areas, a hedge and a flower bed can each be controlled by their own irrigation valve and receive a watering duration appropriate for their individual requirements.
The ESP-TM2 operates fully automatically without Wi-Fi. If smartphone and internet control are required later, the controller can be upgraded with the separately available Rain Bird LNK2 WiFi module.
Simple operation directly at the controller
A smartphone or Wi-Fi connection is not required for normal operation. The large backlit LCD, central dial and clearly arranged buttons make programming directly at the controller straightforward.
Rain Bird designed the ESP-TM2 for simple everyday use. Set the watering start times, station run times and watering days, and the controller then carries out the programmed irrigation automatically.
Manual watering can also be started directly from the controller, which is useful after garden maintenance or when testing an irrigation zone.
Four stations for different garden areas
The four stations represent four separately controlled irrigation circuits. Each station normally operates one 24V AC irrigation valve. Multiple pop-up rotors, spray heads or other irrigation components can be installed downstream of that valve.
The number of sprinklers within a zone is not determined by the controller. Available water pressure, flow and the combined water consumption of the connected sprinklers determine how many can operate correctly.
Dividing the garden into separate zones makes it possible to provide different watering durations for lawn areas, flower beds, hedges and drip irrigation systems.
Three programs and up to four start times
The ESP-TM2 provides three independent irrigation programs with up to four start times available for each program. This gives you flexibility when creating watering schedules for different areas and plant types.
Individual stations can have their own run times, while the programs determine when and on which days the corresponding irrigation takes place.
Multiple start times are useful when watering needs to be divided into several shorter cycles or when a particular area requires watering more than once during the day.
Flexible watering day schedules
Watering schedules can use selected weekdays, odd or even calendar days and cyclic intervals. Permanent days off can also be configured so irrigation does not occur on regular maintenance days.
Seasonal adjustment allows watering durations to be increased or reduced as conditions change without having to reprogram every individual station run time.
Connect standard 24V AC irrigation valves
The ESP-TM2 controls conventional 24V AC irrigation valves commonly used in automatic garden irrigation systems. Individual valve control wires connect to their corresponding station terminals.
In a typical installation, one wire from each valve connects to its station terminal while the second wire from each valve is joined to the common circuit connected to the controller's COM terminal.
Compatible valves include many Rain Bird HV, DV, DVF, PGA and PEB models equipped with the appropriate 24V AC solenoid. Battery-operated 9V DC latching solenoids are not intended for direct connection to the ESP-TM2.
Indoor model for protected locations
The ESP-TM2I4-230V is specifically the indoor version of the ESP-TM2 series. It should therefore be installed in a dry, protected location such as a garage, utility room, basement or suitable garden building.
The compact indoor enclosure differs from the larger ESP-TM2 models designed for indoor and outdoor installation. Rain Bird specifies approximate dimensions of 16.8 cm high, 16.7 cm wide and 4 cm deep for the indoor model.
230V supply with low-voltage valve control
The 230V designation refers to the controller's mains power supply. The irrigation valves themselves are not operated at 230V but are controlled using the low voltage commonly used for irrigation systems.
Wiring the 24V irrigation valves is relatively straightforward. Work involving the 230V mains supply must, however, comply with applicable electrical regulations and should be carried out by a qualified person where required.
Add a rain sensor
The ESP-TM2 supports a compatible rain sensor, allowing automatic irrigation to be interrupted when sufficient natural rainfall occurs without changing the stored watering programs.
Rain Bird lists accessories including the RSD-BEx and WR2 rain or rain/freeze sensors for use with the ESP-TM2 series.
Upgrade to Wi-Fi with LNK2
The ESP-TM2I4-230V does not have built-in Wi-Fi. It is LNK Ready and can be upgraded using the separately available Rain Bird LNK2 WiFi module.
The LNK2 module plugs directly into the controller's accessory port, so the complete controller does not need to be replaced. You can therefore start with conventional local control and add smartphone connectivity later.
With LNK2 installed, the ESP-TM2 can be managed using the Rain Bird app ecosystem, including the current Rain Bird 2.0 app. Rain Bird currently lists the ESP-TM2 as compatible with and recommended for the Rain Bird 2.0 app.
Remote control via smartphone and internet
With the optional LNK2 WiFi module installed, you can access the controller from your smartphone and manage irrigation remotely. The LNK2 connects to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and does not support a 5 GHz-only network.
The app provides access to irrigation schedules, manual station operation and controller settings. Internet-based weather information can also be used for automatic weather-related adjustments.
Reliable operation even without Wi-Fi
Automatic irrigation does not depend on an internet connection. The ESP-TM2 continues to run its locally stored irrigation schedules if Wi-Fi or internet access is unavailable.
Nonvolatile memory protects the stored programming, making the ESP-TM2 suitable both as a conventional irrigation controller and as a smart controller when the optional Wi-Fi module is added.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-TM2I4-230V
What do four stations mean?
The controller can operate four separate irrigation circuits. Each station normally controls one irrigation valve, while multiple sprinklers can be installed within each circuit.
Can several sprinklers be connected to one station?
Yes. The number of sprinklers is determined by the available water pressure, flow and total water demand rather than by the controller itself.
Can I program the ESP-TM2 myself?
Yes. The controller is designed for straightforward programming using its dial, buttons and backlit display. Wi-Fi is not required for programming.
Which irrigation valves can I connect?
The ESP-TM2 is designed for irrigation valves equipped with 24V AC solenoids, including appropriate versions of many Rain Bird HV, DV, DVF, PGA and PEB valves.
Can I use 9V latching valves?
No. Battery-operated 9V DC latching solenoids are not intended for direct connection to the ESP-TM2.
Does the ESP-TM2I4-230V include Wi-Fi?
No. Wi-Fi is not built in. The controller can be upgraded with the separately available Rain Bird LNK2 WiFi module.
Which Wi-Fi module do I need?
The Rain Bird LNK2 WiFi module plugs directly into the accessory port of the ESP-TM2.
Does it work with the Rain Bird 2.0 app?
Yes. Rain Bird currently lists the ESP-TM2 for use with the Rain Bird 2.0 app. The LNK2 WiFi module is required for Wi-Fi connectivity and remote access.
Can I control irrigation when I am away from home?
Yes, when the optional LNK2 WiFi module is installed and connected to a Wi-Fi network with internet access.
Will irrigation continue if Wi-Fi fails?
Yes. Stored irrigation programs run locally in the controller, so normal automatic irrigation does not depend on an active Wi-Fi connection.
Can I connect a rain sensor?
Yes. The ESP-TM2 includes a sensor connection for a compatible rain sensor.
Can the indoor version be installed outdoors?
No. The TM2I4-230V is specifically intended for protected indoor installation. Choose an appropriate outdoor-rated ESP-TM2 model when the controller needs to be mounted outside.
Can the four-station model later be expanded to six or eight stations?
No. ESP-TM2 controllers have a fixed station capacity. If you expect to need more than four irrigation zones later, choosing a larger ESP-TM2 model from the beginning is advisable.
