Control two irrigation zones via Bluetooth
The Rain Bird ESP-BAT-BT 2-zone controller is a modern battery-operated irrigation solution for two independently controlled watering circuits. It is particularly useful where mains electricity is unavailable at the valve location but convenient smartphone-based programming is still desired.
The two stations allow different parts of your garden to be irrigated separately. For example, zone 1 can operate lawn sprinklers while zone 2 controls drip irrigation for flower beds or hedges. Both areas can have different run times, watering days and programs.
Operation is handled through Bluetooth using the Rain Bird 2.0 app. There is no need to program the controller using a small display inside the valve box. Simply connect your smartphone to the controller and configure both irrigation zones through the app.
Easy installation without mains electricity
The ESP-BAT-BT does not require a 230V mains supply. Four AA alkaline batteries power the controller and its compatible 9V latching valve solenoids, making it particularly suitable for remote valve boxes or existing irrigation systems where installing a mains cable would be inconvenient.
The two irrigation valves connect to the corresponding station wires. The 2-zone version provides one common wire, a dedicated master valve/pump output and a sensor wire for a compatible rain sensor.
Compatible 9V DC latching solenoids are required for valve operation. Rain Bird provides the TBOSPSOL solenoid for this purpose. Conventional 24V AC solenoids cannot be operated directly by the ESP-BAT-BT.
Convenient control with the Rain Bird 2.0 app
The ESP-BAT-BT is configured and controlled through the Rain Bird 2.0 app for Android and iOS. Your smartphone communicates directly with the controller using Bluetooth Low Energy, so Wi-Fi is not required at the installation location.
Both irrigation zones can be programmed through the app, manual watering can be started and battery status can be checked. Multiple controllers can also be organised and mapped, making the system convenient when additional battery-operated controllers are installed later.
The app also supports offline workflows. Changes can be prepared and saved while you are outside Bluetooth range and then synchronised once you return to the controller.
Individual programming for both zones
A major advantage of two independent stations is the ability to treat areas with different water requirements separately. Lawn sprinklers may require a completely different watering schedule from a drip line supplying a hedge or flower bed.
The ESP-BAT-BT provides four independent programs, A, B, C and D, with up to eight start times per program. Stations can be assigned to different programs and can use different watering run times.
Watering schedules include custom weekdays, odd or even calendar days and cyclic intervals. Permanent days off can also be selected, allowing a regular mowing day or another recurring event to remain irrigation-free.
Flexible run times for sprinklers and drip irrigation
Station run times start at only 7 seconds and extend up to 9 hours. With the seasonal adjustment increased to 200%, a maximum run time of 18 hours is possible.
This wide range makes the controller suitable for conventional lawn sprinklers as well as drip irrigation systems requiring considerably longer watering periods.
Global monthly seasonal adjustment from 0 to 200% allows irrigation duration to be adapted to seasonal conditions without rebuilding the underlying programs.
Automatic sequential operation
The stations operate independently and are automatically sequenced when programmed watering times overlap. This prevents both irrigation valves from unintentionally operating at the same time.
Automatic stacking is particularly useful where the available water supply is designed to operate only one irrigation circuit at a time.
An interstation delay can also be used between one station switching off and the next station starting, helping the irrigation system stabilise hydraulically between zones.
Rain sensor and planned watering pauses
A dedicated sensor input allows a compatible rain sensor to be connected. Rain Bird identifies the RSD-BEx as a suitable option. Rain sensor shutoff can be applied globally or by station.
The Rain Bird 2.0 app also provides several ways to suspend scheduled irrigation. Rain Delay can pause watering for up to 14 days before automatic operation resumes.
Individual calendar days can also be excluded in advance, which is useful for garden events, maintenance work or other occasions when irrigation should not run.
Master valve and pump-start support
In addition to the two station outputs, the ESP-BAT-BT includes a dedicated master valve/pump output. A central master valve can therefore operate together with either irrigation zone.
An irrigation pump is not powered directly from the controller's batteries. Depending on the installation, a suitable external pump control or relay arrangement is required.
Up to five years of battery life
The ESP-BAT-BT operates with four standard AA alkaline batteries of the AA, LR6 or LR06 type. Rain Bird specifies three full years of battery operation and a potential maximum battery life of up to five years depending on operating conditions and battery quality.
The removable battery compartment simplifies replacement without requiring the complete controller to be removed from the valve box. Stored irrigation programs are retained during battery replacement.
IP68 protection for valve box installation
The ESP-BAT-BT is designed for demanding outdoor irrigation installations. Its IP68-rated enclosure protects the electronics against dust and water, making the controller suitable for underground valve boxes where moisture and temporary flooding can occur.
The battery compartment is additionally sealed, and the controller can be securely mounted inside the valve box using the intended mounting point.
Bluetooth operation without Wi-Fi
The ESP-BAT-BT communicates with your smartphone using Bluetooth Low Energy. It does not include integrated Wi-Fi and does not require Wi-Fi for normal operation.
Bluetooth control is not the same as internet-based remote control. Changes are transferred to the controller when your smartphone is within Bluetooth range. However, app changes can be prepared offline and synchronised when you return to the controller.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-BAT-BT 2-zone controller
What does two zones mean?
You can control two irrigation valves and therefore two separate irrigation circuits. For example, one zone can supply lawn sprinklers while the second operates drip irrigation for flower beds or hedges.
Can both zones have different schedules?
Yes. The two stations can be assigned to different programs and use different watering run times, allowing areas with different water requirements to be controlled separately.
Do both irrigation valves operate at the same time?
No. The ESP-BAT-BT sequences the stations. If programmed watering times overlap, the watering cycles are automatically stacked.
Can I install the controller myself?
Installation is comparatively straightforward because no 230V mains supply is required at the controller. Compatible 9V DC latching solenoids are required and suitable waterproof wire connectors should be used inside the valve box.
Which solenoids are required?
The ESP-BAT-BT requires compatible 9V DC latching solenoids. Rain Bird provides the TBOSPSOL for this purpose. Standard 24V AC solenoids cannot be operated directly.
Which Rain Bird valves are compatible with TBOSPSOL?
Rain Bird lists several compatible valve families including DV, DVF, PGA, PEB and PESB. The TBOSPSOL configuration is not compatible with the Rain Bird 100HV9V.
Which batteries are required?
The controller requires four AA alkaline batteries of the AA, LR6 or LR06 type. Batteries are not included.
How long do the batteries last?
Rain Bird specifies three full years of battery operation, with a potential maximum life of up to five years depending on battery quality, watering schedules and operating conditions.
Can I connect a rain sensor?
Yes. A dedicated sensor input is provided for a compatible dry-contact rain sensor such as the Rain Bird RSD-BEx.
Can I connect a master valve?
Yes. The ESP-BAT-BT includes a dedicated master valve/pump output in addition to its two irrigation stations.
Does it work with the Rain Bird 2.0 app?
Yes. The ESP-BAT-BT is configured and controlled through the Rain Bird 2.0 app for compatible Android and iOS devices.
Do I need Wi-Fi?
No. Communication between your smartphone and the controller uses Bluetooth Low Energy, so Wi-Fi is not required at the installation location.
Can I control it remotely over the internet?
No. Direct communication with the controller requires Bluetooth range. Changes can be prepared in the app's offline mode and synchronised when you return within Bluetooth range.
Can it be installed inside a valve box?
Yes. The IP68-rated enclosure is designed for demanding outdoor environments and installation inside irrigation valve boxes.
