Battery-operated controller for one irrigation zone
The Rain Bird ESP-9V is a battery-operated irrigation controller for one watering zone and an ideal solution when no mains power supply is available at the installation location. The controller automatically opens and closes a compatible irrigation valve according to your programmed watering times and days.
Typical applications include individual lawn areas, flower beds, hedges, drip irrigation systems and remote areas of the garden. The ESP-9V is particularly useful in valve boxes where a water supply and irrigation valve are available but no electrical power cable has been installed.
The 1-zone version is designed to automatically control one irrigation circuit. It provides professional automatic valve control without requiring a conventional mains-powered controller in the house, garage or utility room.
Easy to install and program yourself
Installation is straightforward because the ESP-9V does not require mains electricity. The controller operates with one 9-volt alkaline battery or two 9-volt alkaline batteries for extended operating life. No 230V power wiring to the controller is required.
Choosing the correct irrigation valve solenoid is important. The ESP-9V is designed for compatible 9V DC latching solenoids. A conventional Rain Bird valve equipped with a 24V AC solenoid cannot simply be connected directly to the ESP-9V.
The 9V latching solenoid is connected to the controller using the appropriate control wires. Because the ESP-9V does not use mains voltage, installation is considerably simpler than with a mains-powered controller. Electrical connections should nevertheless be made according to Rain Bird's installation instructions and protected against moisture when installed outdoors.
Simple operation with a large display
Rain Bird designed the ESP-9V to make programming straightforward. Its large LCD display presents the important settings clearly, allowing run times, start times and watering days to be configured directly for the irrigation zone.
Up to six independent start times are available for the zone. This is useful if you want to irrigate at several times during the day or divide the required amount of water into several shorter cycles to improve infiltration on heavy soils.
Watering days can be selected in several ways. You can choose specific days of the week, use a cyclic schedule from every 1 to 30 days or irrigate on odd or even calendar days.
Manual watering and watering delay
In addition to automatic operation, irrigation can be started manually at any time using the dedicated manual watering button. This allows you to provide additional watering without changing the stored automatic schedule.
A watering delay of 1 to 9 days is also available. If sufficient rain has fallen, automatic irrigation can be temporarily suspended and the controller will subsequently return to the programmed schedule. A sensor input with bypass function allows a compatible rain sensor to be integrated into the system.
Waterproof design for installation in a valve box
One of the major advantages of the ESP-9V is its rugged construction. The controller is IP68 certified for protection against dust and water intrusion, allowing it to be installed directly inside a valve box close to the irrigation valve.
A dual-sealed battery compartment helps keep water, dirt and debris away from the batteries. The plastic enclosure is also designed for excellent resistance to weathering, yellowing and ageing, making the ESP-9V suitable for demanding outdoor irrigation installations.
Long battery life and non-volatile memory
According to Rain Bird, the ESP-9V operates for approximately one year with one 9-volt alkaline battery. Using two 9-volt alkaline batteries provides approximately two years or more of operation, depending on operating conditions and battery quality.
The controller also features non-volatile program memory. Rain Bird specifies 100-year program memory, meaning your programmed irrigation schedule is retained if the batteries become depleted or are replaced.
No Wi-Fi and no Rain Bird 2.0 app
The Rain Bird ESP-9V does not feature Wi-Fi and is not controlled through the Rain Bird 2.0 app. All programming is carried out directly on the controller using the LCD display and control buttons.
This makes it particularly suitable for remote areas where neither mains electricity nor a reliable Wi-Fi connection is available. Once programmed, the ESP-9V operates independently without requiring a smartphone or internet connection.
If smartphone, Wi-Fi and Rain Bird 2.0 app control are important to you, a compatible Rain Bird smart controller is a more suitable choice. The ESP-9V is specifically designed for reliable, independent battery-powered control directly at the irrigation valve.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-9V
Can I install the ESP-9V myself?
Yes. Installation is comparatively straightforward because the ESP-9V is battery-operated and does not require a 230V mains connection. It is connected to a compatible 9V latching solenoid on the irrigation valve. Always follow the Rain Bird installation instructions and use suitable waterproof wire connections outdoors.
Can I connect a standard 24V Rain Bird irrigation valve?
Not with a conventional 24V AC solenoid. The ESP-9V requires a compatible 9V DC latching solenoid. On a suitable irrigation valve, the existing solenoid may therefore need to be replaced with the appropriate 9V version.
What does one zone mean?
One zone represents one independently controlled irrigation circuit or valve. The 1-zone ESP-9V therefore controls one irrigation valve and the irrigation area connected downstream of that valve.
Do I need a power connection inside the valve box?
No. The ESP-9V is powered by 9V alkaline batteries, so no mains power socket or 230V cable is required at the installation location.
How long do the batteries last?
Rain Bird specifies approximately one year of operation with one 9V alkaline battery and approximately two years or more with two 9V alkaline batteries. Actual battery life depends on battery quality, usage and environmental conditions.
Can the ESP-9V be installed inside a valve box?
Yes. The controller has an IP68-certified waterproof enclosure and dual-sealed battery compartment and is specifically designed for installations such as irrigation valve boxes.
Can I connect a rain sensor?
Yes. The ESP-9V includes a sensor input with bypass functionality for integrating a compatible sensor into the irrigation system.
Will my program remain stored when I replace the batteries?
Yes. The non-volatile program memory retains the stored irrigation schedule even when the batteries are depleted or replaced.
Does the Rain Bird ESP-9V have Wi-Fi?
No. The ESP-9V does not have Wi-Fi. Programming is performed directly on the controller.
Can I control the ESP-9V with the Rain Bird 2.0 app?
No. The ESP-9V is not a Wi-Fi controller for the Rain Bird 2.0 app. No smartphone, Wi-Fi network or internet connection is required for automatic operation.
