Control four garden areas from your smartphone
The Rain Bird ESP-BAT-BT 4-zone controller is a modern battery-operated irrigation solution for gardens with several separate watering areas. Up to four irrigation valves can be controlled independently without requiring mains electricity at the valve box. Programming and operation are handled conveniently through Bluetooth using the Rain Bird 2.0 app.
Four zones provide plenty of flexibility when dividing your garden into separate irrigation circuits. For example, the front garden, lawn, flower beds and hedges can each have their own zone. Pop-up rotors, spray heads and drip irrigation can also be combined because each zone can be programmed according to its individual water requirements.
The ESP-BAT-BT is particularly useful for valve boxes located away from buildings or where installing a mains power cable would be inconvenient. Once programmed, the controller automatically carries out the stored irrigation schedules.
Installation without a 230V mains connection
The ESP-BAT-BT operates with four high-quality AA alkaline batteries, eliminating the need for a mains power cable to the controller. This can make the automation of existing irrigation systems considerably easier.
The four zone valves connect to their corresponding station wires. The 4-zone version provides two common wires, allowing the wiring of several irrigation valves to be organised more conveniently inside a larger valve box.
Compatible 9V DC latching solenoids are required for valve operation. Rain Bird provides the TBOSPSOL latching solenoid for this purpose. Conventional 24V AC solenoids cannot be operated directly by the ESP-BAT-BT.
Complete control with the Rain Bird 2.0 app
The ESP-BAT-BT communicates with your smartphone using Bluetooth Low Energy and is configured through the Rain Bird 2.0 app for Android and iOS.
Within the app you can edit the programs for all four irrigation zones, start manual watering, adjust seasonal settings and check battery status. Multiple ESP-BAT-BT controllers can also be organised and mapped when several controllers are used across a property.
PIN code protection helps prevent unwanted changes, while controller sharing makes it possible to provide access to additional users when required.
Four zones for different plants and garden areas
Four independently controlled irrigation valves allow the watering system to be divided according to the actual needs of the garden. A sunny lawn may require a different watering duration from a shaded area, while drip irrigation for hedges or flower beds will often require much longer run times than conventional lawn sprinklers.
The ESP-BAT-BT provides four independent programs, A, B, C and D. Each program offers up to eight start times per day. Individual stations can be assigned to several programs with different watering run times.
This makes it possible to create more sophisticated irrigation schedules while keeping different garden areas independently controlled.
Flexible run times from seconds to hours
Station run times can be adjusted from 7 seconds to 9 hours. With seasonal adjustment increased to 200%, a maximum run time of 18 hours is possible.
This wide adjustment range makes the controller suitable for conventional lawn irrigation as well as drip irrigation and other systems that may require considerably longer watering durations.
Global monthly seasonal adjustment from 0 to 200% allows watering durations to be adapted to seasonal conditions without rebuilding the underlying irrigation programs.
Choose watering days to suit your schedule
Watering can be scheduled using selected weekdays, cyclic intervals or odd and even calendar days.
Permanent no-water days can also be defined. This is useful, for example, when a particular day is regularly reserved for lawn mowing or garden maintenance.
Up to 15 individual calendar days per year can additionally be excluded from irrigation for planned maintenance, events or other occasions.
Automatic sequential operation of four zones
Operating several irrigation circuits simultaneously is often undesirable. The ESP-BAT-BT therefore uses independent station operation with automatic stacking when programmed watering times overlap.
The affected zones are operated sequentially, allowing the available water supply to serve one active irrigation circuit at a time.
With four irrigation zones, this automatic sequencing is particularly convenient because you do not need to manually calculate separate start times simply to prevent overlapping operation.
Rain sensor and watering delays
A dedicated sensor connection allows a compatible rain sensor to be integrated into the irrigation system. Rain Bird identifies the RSD-BEx as one compatible option. Rain sensor shutoff can be configured globally or by station.
Rain Delay can suspend irrigation for up to 14 days. Once the selected period expires, the controller automatically returns to its normal irrigation schedule.
Dedicated master valve and pump output
In addition to the four station outputs, the ESP-BAT-BT includes a dedicated master valve/pump output. This means none of the four irrigation stations needs to be sacrificed when a master valve is required.
For pump installations, the output is used to control an appropriate external pump control system. The irrigation pump itself is not powered directly by the controller's AA batteries.
Long battery life and easy replacement
The ESP-BAT-BT operates with four standard AA alkaline batteries. Rain Bird specifies battery life of up to five years depending on battery quality, programming and operating conditions.
A removable battery tray simplifies battery replacement without requiring the complete controller to be removed from its installed position. Stored irrigation schedules and settings remain intact during battery replacement.
A backup program can also be saved and restored when required.
IP68 protection for underground valve boxes
The Rain Bird ESP-BAT-BT is designed for demanding irrigation environments. Its IP68-rated enclosure protects the electronics against dust, dirt and water ingress, including installations in valve boxes that may flood.
The controller and irrigation valves can therefore be installed together inside an underground valve box. Positioning the controller appropriately near the top of the box can also help maximise Bluetooth performance.
Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi
The ESP-BAT-BT includes built-in Bluetooth but does not have integrated Wi-Fi. Your smartphone communicates directly with the controller using Bluetooth Low Energy, so a Wi-Fi router or internet connection is not required at the valve box.
Bluetooth is not the same as internet-based remote access. Direct communication requires your smartphone to be within Bluetooth range. Settings can, however, be prepared in the Rain Bird 2.0 app while away from the controller and synchronised when Bluetooth communication is available again.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-BAT-BT 4-zone controller
What does four zones mean?
The controller can operate four irrigation valves and therefore four separate watering circuits. For example, the front garden, lawn, flower beds and hedges can each have their own zone.
Does the valve box need a mains power connection?
No. The controller operates with four AA alkaline batteries and does not require a 230V mains connection.
Can all four zones have different watering schedules?
Yes. Stations can be assigned to different programs and use different watering run times, allowing areas with different water requirements to be controlled separately.
Can several sprinklers be connected to one zone?
Yes. A zone refers to one irrigation circuit controlled by one valve, not to one individual sprinkler. The number of sprinklers that can operate within a zone depends primarily on the available water flow and pressure and the water demand of the sprinklers.
Which solenoids are required?
The ESP-BAT-BT requires compatible 9V DC latching solenoids. Rain Bird provides the TBOSPSOL for this purpose. Standard 24V AC solenoids cannot be operated directly.
Why does the 4-zone model have two common wires?
The four- and six-station versions provide two common wires, making it easier to organise the wiring of multiple irrigation valves inside the valve box.
