Battery-powered irrigation control with Bluetooth
The Rain Bird ESP-BAT-BT 1-zone controller combines the independence of a battery-operated irrigation controller with convenient Bluetooth control from your smartphone. It is ideal for automating a single irrigation circuit where mains power is unavailable and you want to manage watering settings through an app.
Typical applications include individual lawns, flower beds, hedges, drip irrigation systems and remote garden areas. The ESP-BAT-BT can be installed close to the irrigation valve without requiring a mains socket or 230V power cable.
Unlike conventional battery-operated controllers with a built-in display, programming is performed through your smartphone. Simply connect to the controller via Bluetooth and manage irrigation using the Rain Bird 2.0 app.
Easy installation without mains power
Installation is straightforward because the ESP-BAT-BT does not require a mains power connection. The controller operates with four AA alkaline batteries of the LR6/LR06 type. Batteries are installed in the removable battery compartment and are not included.
A compatible 9V DC latching solenoid is required to operate the irrigation valve. Rain Bird specifically provides the TBOSPSOL latching solenoid for this system. It is compatible with several Rain Bird valve families including DV, DVF, PGA, PEB and PESB series.
A conventional 24V AC solenoid cannot be operated directly by the ESP-BAT-BT. On compatible Rain Bird valves, the existing solenoid may be replaced with an appropriate 9V DC latching solenoid.
Control with the Rain Bird 2.0 app
The key advantage of the ESP-BAT-BT is its Bluetooth connection. The controller works with the Rain Bird 2.0 app for Android and iOS devices, allowing you to configure watering schedules, adjust programs, manually start irrigation and view important controller information from your smartphone.
No Wi-Fi connection is required. Your smartphone communicates directly with the controller using Bluetooth Low Energy. This makes the ESP-BAT-BT particularly useful for valve boxes located in garden areas beyond the Wi-Fi coverage of your home.
The app provides access to battery status, programs, station settings, geographical mapping and Bluetooth status. PIN code protection is also available to help protect access to the controller.
Four programs with eight start times each
Although this version controls only one irrigation zone, the ESP-BAT-BT provides extensive programming capabilities. Four independent programs, A, B, C and D, are available, with up to eight start times per program.
The irrigation station can be assigned to none, one or several programs, allowing more sophisticated watering schedules to be created when required.
Watering days can be configured using custom weekdays, cyclic intervals or odd and even calendar days. Permanent days off can also be selected, for example to prevent irrigation on a regular lawn-mowing day.
Highly flexible watering durations
The ESP-BAT-BT is suitable for more than conventional lawn sprinklers. Its flexible station run times also make it suitable for drip irrigation and other watering applications.
Run times can begin at only a few seconds and extend over many hours, making both short watering pulses and long irrigation cycles possible.
A global seasonal adjustment from 0 to 200% allows watering duration to be adapted to seasonal conditions without rebuilding the underlying irrigation schedule.
Direct rain sensor connection
The ESP-BAT-BT includes a dedicated sensor input for a compatible rain sensor. Rain Bird identifies the RSD-BEx rain sensor as a suitable option, allowing automatic irrigation to be suspended when sufficient rainfall occurs.
Rain sensor operation can be managed through the controller, helping to prevent unnecessary watering during rainy conditions.
Master valve and pump-start support
Even the 1-zone ESP-BAT-BT provides a dedicated master valve/pump output in addition to its irrigation station. This gives the controller greater flexibility than many basic single-zone battery-operated controllers.
A master valve can therefore operate together with the irrigation zone. For pump applications, an appropriate external pump control or relay arrangement may be required. The irrigation pump itself is not powered directly by the battery-operated controller.
Up to five years of battery life
Rain Bird designed the ESP-BAT-BT for long battery life. The controller operates with four high-quality AA alkaline batteries. Rain Bird specifies approximately three years of battery life with the possibility of up to five years depending on the irrigation schedule and operating conditions.
The removable battery compartment makes battery replacement straightforward. The battery pack can be pulled out without removing the complete controller from the valve box.
The irrigation program is retained when batteries are replaced. A backup program can also be saved and restored when required.
IP68 protection for valve box installation
The ESP-BAT-BT is designed for permanent outdoor irrigation installations. Its enclosure is IP68 rated for complete protection against solids and water ingress. This makes it suitable for demanding environments such as underground irrigation valve boxes.
The battery compartment is additionally sealed, while the controller can be securely mounted inside the valve box using the provided mounting arrangement.
Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi
The Rain Bird ESP-BAT-BT uses Bluetooth Low Energy but does not include Wi-Fi. Your smartphone connects directly to the controller through the Rain Bird 2.0 app, so a Wi-Fi router or internet connection is not required at the installation location.
Bluetooth should not be confused with internet-based Wi-Fi remote control. To establish an active connection with the ESP-BAT-BT, your smartphone must be within Bluetooth communication range of the controller.
This makes the ESP-BAT-BT particularly attractive when you want convenient app-based programming but have neither mains electricity nor Wi-Fi available at the valve box.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-BAT-BT 1-zone controller
What is the difference between the ESP-BAT-BT and ESP-9V?
The ESP-BAT-BT is the newer Bluetooth-enabled controller and is programmed using the Rain Bird 2.0 app. It operates with four AA batteries, provides four programs with up to eight start times each and offers considerably longer battery life. The conventional ESP-9V is programmed directly on the controller using its display and buttons.
Can I install the ESP-BAT-BT myself?
Yes. Installation is comparatively straightforward because no 230V mains connection is required. The controller is connected to a compatible 9V DC latching solenoid. Rain Bird installation instructions should be followed and suitable waterproof wire connections should be used inside valve boxes.
What does one zone mean?
The 1-zone version controls one irrigation valve and therefore one irrigation circuit. Depending on the available water flow, several sprinklers, spray heads or drip lines can be connected downstream of that valve.
Which batteries do I need?
The ESP-BAT-BT requires four AA alkaline batteries of the LR6/LR06 type. Batteries are not included.
How long do the batteries last?
Rain Bird specifies approximately three to five years of battery life with four high-quality AA alkaline batteries. Actual battery life depends on the watering schedule, usage and battery quality.
Which irrigation valves can I use?
The controller requires an irrigation valve with a compatible 9V DC latching solenoid. Rain Bird lists several valve families as compatible with its TBOSPSOL latching solenoid, including DV, DVF, PGA, PEB and PESB series.
Can I connect a rain sensor?
Yes. The ESP-BAT-BT includes a sensor input for a dry-contact rain sensor. Rain Bird identifies the RSD-BEx as a compatible option.
Does the ESP-BAT-BT have Wi-Fi?
No. The controller uses Bluetooth Low Energy and does not include integrated Wi-Fi.
Does it work with the Rain Bird 2.0 app?
Yes. The ESP-BAT-BT is designed for programming and control through the Rain Bird 2.0 app on compatible Android and iOS devices.
Can I control the ESP-BAT-BT remotely over the internet?
No. Active communication between the smartphone and controller uses Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi, so you must be within Bluetooth communication range of the controller.
Can I install it inside an underground valve box?
Yes. The IP68-rated enclosure is designed for demanding outdoor environments and installation inside irrigation valve boxes.
