Independent control of four irrigation zones
The Rain Bird ESP-9V 4-zone controller is a flexible irrigation solution for gardens and landscaped areas where several watering zones need to be automated but no mains power supply is available. Up to four irrigation valves can be controlled independently, allowing lawn areas, flower beds, hedges and drip irrigation systems to be managed from one compact controller.
Each of the four zones can have its own watering schedule. A lawn area can therefore receive longer but less frequent watering while drip irrigation for flower beds or hedges operates according to a completely different schedule. Run times, start times and watering days can be individually configured for every zone.
Because the ESP-9V operates entirely from 9V alkaline batteries, no mains socket or 230V power cable is required at the installation location. This makes it particularly useful for underground valve boxes, existing irrigation systems and remote garden areas where installing a power cable would be difficult.
Install directly inside the valve box
The controller can be installed close to the irrigation valves and operates with one or two 9V alkaline batteries. Individual valves are connected directly to the ESP-9V control wires. The 4-zone version also provides two common wires, helping to simplify the wiring of multiple irrigation valves.
Compatible irrigation valves must be equipped with suitable 9V DC latching solenoids. Standard 24V AC solenoids cannot be operated directly by the ESP-9V. On compatible valves, an existing 24V solenoid may be replaced with a suitable 9V latching solenoid.
Because no mains voltage needs to be connected, installation is comparatively straightforward. Suitable waterproof wire connectors should be used inside the valve box, and Rain Bird's installation instructions should always be followed.
Individual schedules for all four zones
Four independently programmable zones provide considerably more flexibility than a basic single-zone or two-zone controller. Each zone can have its own run times, start times and watering days, allowing areas with very different water requirements to be managed by one controller.
Up to six independent start times are available per zone. Run time can be programmed from 1 to 240 minutes, making the ESP-9V suitable for short sprinkler cycles as well as longer-running drip irrigation systems.
Watering days can be selected as specific days of the week, a repeating cycle from every 1 to 30 days or odd and even calendar days.
Automatic sequential operation of four zones
In irrigation systems with several valves, operating all watering zones simultaneously is often undesirable. The ESP-9V automatically sequences the zones so that only one zone valve operates at a time.
If several zones are programmed to start at the same time, the controller begins with the lowest-numbered zone. Once that watering cycle has finished, the next scheduled zone starts automatically. This means you do not have to calculate separate start times simply to prevent the irrigation zones from overlapping.
Contractor Rapid Programming™ further simplifies initial setup. Start times and watering days from zone 1 can initially be copied to the remaining zones and then individually adjusted. This is particularly convenient when configuring a four-zone irrigation system.
Flexible control for changing garden conditions
In addition to automatic operation, individual zones or all irrigation zones can be started manually. This is useful when a newly planted area needs additional watering without changing the stored automatic schedule.
After rainfall, automatic irrigation can be delayed for 1 to 9 days. Once the selected delay has expired, the controller automatically returns to its normal watering schedule.
A compatible rain sensor can also be connected. The sensor bypass function allows the controller to either respond to or temporarily ignore the connected sensor.
Master valve and pump-start support
The 4-zone ESP-9V also provides a master valve/pump-start circuit. This allows the controller to be used in irrigation systems where a central master valve needs to operate in addition to the four individual zone valves.
The pump-start function can also be integrated into suitable irrigation systems. The irrigation pump itself is not powered directly by the small controller. Depending on the pump installation, an appropriate external pump control or relay arrangement may be required.
Designed for demanding valve box conditions
A controller installed directly beside irrigation valves must withstand more demanding conditions than a controller located inside a dry utility room. The ESP-9V therefore features an IP68-rated enclosure and is specifically designed for installations such as underground irrigation valve boxes.
The battery compartment is dual-sealed to help keep water, dirt and debris away from the batteries. Its durable plastic enclosure is also designed for excellent resistance to weathering, ageing and yellowing.
This construction makes the ESP-9V particularly useful for decentralised irrigation installations. The controller and irrigation valves can be located together inside the valve box without requiring a mains power cable from the building.
Long battery life and protected programming
The ESP-9V can operate with one or two standard 9V alkaline batteries. Rain Bird specifies approximately one year of operation under normal conditions with one battery and at least approximately two years with two batteries. Actual battery life depends on battery quality, switching frequency and environmental conditions.
Non-volatile program memory protects the stored irrigation schedule. If the batteries become depleted or are removed for replacement, the programmed watering settings remain stored. Rain Bird specifies 100-year program memory.
No Wi-Fi or smartphone connection required
The Rain Bird ESP-9V is designed for simple and independent operation. It does not include Wi-Fi and requires neither a smartphone nor an internet connection for automatic irrigation. Programming is carried out directly on the controller using the large LCD display and control buttons.
The ESP-9V is therefore not controlled through the Rain Bird 2.0 app. For remote valve boxes, local control can be an advantage because neither Wi-Fi coverage nor internet access is required. Once programmed, the controller independently manages all four irrigation zones according to their stored schedules.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-9V 4-zone controller
What does four zones mean?
The controller can operate four independent irrigation valves and therefore four separate watering circuits. For example, the front garden, lawn, flower beds and hedge irrigation can each be assigned to a separate zone.
Can each zone have a different schedule?
Yes. Run times, start times and watering days can be individually programmed for each of the four zones, allowing irrigation to be matched to the different water requirements of your garden.
How many start times are available?
Up to six independent start times are available for each zone, allowing an irrigation area to be watered several times per day when required.
Does the ESP-9V operate all four zones simultaneously?
No. The controller sequences the zones and operates only one zone valve at a time. If start times overlap, the lower-numbered zone operates first.
Can I install the 4-zone controller myself?
Installation is comparatively straightforward because the ESP-9V does not require a 230V mains supply. The control wires are connected to compatible 9V latching solenoids. Suitable waterproof wire connectors should be used inside valve boxes and Rain Bird's installation instructions should be followed.
Which irrigation valves do I need?
The valves must be equipped with compatible 9V DC latching solenoids. Standard 24V AC solenoids cannot be controlled directly by the ESP-9V.
Why does the 4-zone version have two common wires?
Rain Bird equips the 4- and 6-zone versions with a second common wire to make the installation and wiring of multiple irrigation valves easier.
Can I connect a rain sensor?
Yes. The ESP-9V provides a sensor input for a compatible rain sensor together with a sensor bypass function.
Can I connect a master valve?
Yes. The 4-zone version supports a master valve or pump-start circuit in addition to the four irrigation zones.
Can the controller be installed inside a valve box?
Yes. The ESP-9V features an IP68-rated enclosure and a dual-sealed battery compartment and is designed for demanding installations such as irrigation valve boxes.
Will my settings be lost when I replace the batteries?
No. Non-volatile memory retains the stored irrigation schedule even when the batteries are depleted or removed.
Does the ESP-9V 4-zone controller have Wi-Fi?
No. The ESP-9V does not have integrated Wi-Fi and does not require an internet connection for automatic operation.
Does it work with the Rain Bird 2.0 app?
No. The ESP-9V is programmed directly using its display and buttons and is not designed for control through the Rain Bird 2.0 app.
