Six irrigation zones without mains power
The Rain Bird ESP-9V 6-zone controller allows you to automate larger irrigation systems without requiring a 230V mains power connection at the controller. Up to six irrigation valves and therefore six separate watering areas can be individually programmed and automatically operated in sequence.
Six zones provide plenty of flexibility when dividing a garden into different irrigation areas. The front garden, lawn, side garden, flower beds, hedges and a drip irrigation system can each have their own watering circuit. Every area can receive the run times and watering days it actually requires.
Battery operation is particularly useful on larger properties. The controller can be installed directly beside the irrigation valves inside a valve box, eliminating the need to run a mains power cable from the building to the valve location.
Easy connection of up to six irrigation valves
The ESP-9V operates with one or two standard 9V alkaline batteries. Irrigation valves are connected directly to the corresponding station wires. The 6-zone version also provides two common wires, helping to simplify the wiring of a larger number of irrigation valves.
The controller requires compatible 9V DC latching solenoids. Standard 24V AC solenoids cannot be connected directly. On suitable irrigation valves, an existing 24V solenoid may be replaced with a compatible 9V latching solenoid.
Because no 230V mains connection is required at the controller, installation is considerably simpler than with a conventional mains-powered irrigation controller. Connections to the valve solenoids should nevertheless be made carefully using suitable waterproof wire connectors.
Program six zones to suit your garden
Different parts of a garden rarely require exactly the same amount of water. This is where the 6-zone ESP-9V provides considerable flexibility. A sunny lawn can have a different watering duration from a shaded area, while drip irrigation for hedges or flower beds can operate according to an entirely different schedule.
Run time can be set from 1 to 240 minutes for each of the six zones. Up to six independent start times are also available per zone, allowing several shorter watering cycles to be distributed throughout the day when required.
Watering days can be selected as specific days of the week, a cyclic interval from every 1 to 30 days or odd and even calendar days. Each zone can be programmed individually.
Automatic zone sequencing prevents overlap
With six irrigation circuits, manually calculating when every previous watering cycle will finish would be inconvenient. The ESP-9V handles this automatically. Its automatic zone-stacking function operates only one zone valve at a time.
If several zones are programmed for the same start time, the ESP-9V automatically begins with the lowest-numbered zone. Once that watering cycle is complete, the next scheduled zone starts automatically.
This is particularly useful where the available water flow is limited. Instead of opening several valves simultaneously and dividing the available flow between them, individual irrigation circuits are supplied one after another.
Quick setup even with six irrigation zones
Despite controlling six zones, programming remains straightforward. The large LCD display presents the important settings clearly and is designed to reduce the need to navigate through complicated menus.
Contractor Rapid Programming™ simplifies initial setup by copying the start times and watering days from zone 1 to the remaining zones. You can then adjust only the settings that need to differ for each individual irrigation area.
Contractor Default™ also allows a preferred irrigation schedule to be saved and restored when required.
Manual watering and seasonal adjustment
You are not limited to the automatic schedule. A dedicated manual watering button allows an individual zone or all zones to be operated when required without changing the stored automatic program.
A global seasonal adjustment from 10 to 200% allows programmed watering durations to be reduced or increased together. This makes it easier to adapt all six irrigation zones to changing seasonal conditions without reprogramming every individual run time.
Automatic irrigation can also be delayed for 1 to 9 days following rainfall. Once the selected delay has expired, the controller automatically returns to its normal watering schedule.
Rain sensor, master valve and pump start
The ESP-9V provides a sensor input for a compatible rain sensor together with a sensor bypass function.
The 6-zone version also supports a master valve or pump-start circuit. A central master valve can therefore operate together with the individual irrigation zones.
For pump installations, the irrigation pump itself is not powered directly by the ESP-9V. Depending on the system, a suitable external pump control or relay arrangement may be required.
IP68 protection for valve box installation
The ESP-9V is designed for more than installation in a dry utility room. Its rugged enclosure is IP68 rated and is specifically suitable for demanding locations such as underground irrigation valve boxes.
The battery compartment is dual-sealed to protect the batteries against water, dirt and debris. The plastic enclosure also provides excellent resistance to weathering, ageing and yellowing.
This allows the controller and irrigation valves to be installed together at a central point in the irrigation system without requiring a mains power cable from the building.
Long operating life with up to two 9V batteries
The Rain Bird ESP-9V can operate with either one or two 9V alkaline batteries. One high-quality battery provides approximately one year of operation under normal conditions, while two 9V alkaline batteries provide approximately two years or more.
Stored irrigation programs remain protected when batteries are replaced. The ESP-9V uses non-volatile program memory, which Rain Bird specifies as retaining the irrigation program for 100 years.
Independent operation without Wi-Fi or an app
The ESP-9V 6-zone controller requires neither Wi-Fi nor an internet connection. Setup is performed directly on the controller using the LCD display and control buttons. Once programmed, the controller independently operates according to the stored irrigation schedules.
This ESP-9V model is not designed for control through the Rain Bird 2.0 app. For large properties this can be an advantage when the valve box is located far from the house and reliable Wi-Fi coverage is unavailable.

Frequently asked questions about the Rain Bird ESP-9V 6-zone controller
What type of irrigation system is suitable for six zones?
Six zones are particularly useful for larger gardens with several different irrigation areas. Lawns, flower beds, hedges, the front garden and drip irrigation systems can all be controlled separately.
Can all six zones have different schedules?
Yes. Each zone can have its own run times, start times and watering days, allowing irrigation to be matched precisely to the requirements of each area.
How many start times are available?
Up to six start times are available for each of the six zones, allowing several watering cycles per day when required.
Do several zones operate simultaneously?
No. The ESP-9V automatically sequences irrigation zones and operates only one zone valve at a time.
What happens if several zones have the same start time?
The controller starts with the lowest-numbered zone and then automatically operates the remaining scheduled zones one after another.
Can I install the ESP-9V myself?
No 230V connection is required because the controller is battery-operated, making installation comparatively straightforward. Irrigation valves must be equipped with compatible 9V latching solenoids and waterproof wire connectors should be used inside the valve box.
Can I use standard 24V irrigation valves?
Not with their standard 24V AC solenoids. The ESP-9V requires compatible 9V DC latching solenoids. On suitable valves, the solenoid can be replaced accordingly.
Why does the 6-zone model have two common wires?
The additional common wire simplifies wiring when several irrigation valves are installed. Rain Bird therefore equips the 4- and 6-zone versions with two common wires.
Can I connect a rain sensor?
Yes. A compatible rain sensor can be connected to the sensor input, and a sensor bypass function is also provided.
Does the ESP-9V support a master valve?
Yes. The 6-zone version supports a master valve or pump-start circuit in addition to the six zone valves.
Can I install the controller inside an underground valve box?
Yes. The IP68-rated enclosure and dual-sealed battery compartment are specifically designed for demanding installations such as irrigation valve boxes.
What happens to my programs when the batteries are replaced?
The stored irrigation programs remain in non-volatile memory, so the six zones do not need to be completely reprogrammed after a normal battery replacement.
Does the 6-zone ESP-9V have Wi-Fi?
No. The ESP-9V does not have integrated Wi-Fi and does not require an internet connection.
Can I control it with the Rain Bird 2.0 app?
No. This model is programmed directly on the controller and is not designed for control through the Rain Bird 2.0 app.
