The Rain Bird 1804-SAM is a high-quality pop-up spray body from the proven Rain Bird 1800 Series and is particularly suitable for automatic irrigation systems on lawns with elevation changes. Unlike the standard Rain Bird 1804, the SAM version features an integrated Seal-A-Matic™ check valve. This prevents water in the lateral pipe from draining through sprinklers installed at lower elevations after the irrigation system has been switched off.

The integrated SAM check valve can hold back water with elevation differences of up to 4.2 m (14 feet). This makes the 1804-SAM particularly useful on sloping lawns, hillsides and properties with varying ground levels. Preventing low-head drainage helps reduce unnecessary water loss, puddling and erosion around sprinklers installed at lower points in the irrigation zone.

With a pop-up height of 10.2 cm (4 inches), the Rain Bird 1804-SAM is an excellent choice for typical lawn areas, front gardens and other landscaped areas. During irrigation, water pressure raises the stem above the surrounding grass. When watering stops, a strong retract spring reliably returns the stem into the sprinkler body, leaving the sprinkler discreetly installed below ground level.

The Rain Bird 1804-SAM is supplied without a nozzle. This allows you to select a suitable Rain Bird spray or rotary nozzle according to the size and shape of the area to be irrigated. The selected nozzle determines the throw distance, watering pattern and water distribution, allowing the spray body to be adapted to different irrigation applications.

Like other models in the Rain Bird 1800 Series, the 1804-SAM features a pressure-activated wiper seal that supports reliable stem operation and helps protect the mechanism against dirt and debris. The UV-resistant plastic body and corrosion-resistant stainless steel components are designed for dependable long-term outdoor use. Important sprinkler components can also be removed from the top for convenient flushing and maintenance.

The Rain Bird 1804-SAM is therefore particularly suitable for automatic lawn irrigation systems installed on sloping ground. On completely level areas where low-head drainage is not an issue, the standard Rain Bird 1804 may be sufficient. Where elevation changes are present, the integrated SAM check valve provides additional protection against unwanted drainage and water loss.

Seal-A-Matic check valve for sloping areas

The integrated Seal-A-Matic™ check valve is the key difference between the Rain Bird 1804-SAM and the standard 1804. When an irrigation zone shuts down, the valve prevents water remaining in the lateral pipe from draining through sprinklers installed at lower elevations.

The SAM valve can accommodate elevation differences of up to 4.2 m. This helps reduce water loss, puddling and erosion around lower sprinkler locations and eliminates the need to install a separate under-the-head check valve for this purpose.

Compatible nozzles for the Rain Bird 1804-SAM

The Rain Bird 1804-SAM can be combined with a variety of Rain Bird spray and rotary nozzles. The appropriate nozzle can be selected according to the required throw distance, watering pattern and size of the irrigation area. This allows the same spray body to be adapted to many different lawn and landscape irrigation applications.

The nozzle is sold separately and is not included with the Rain Bird 1804-SAM.

Installation and use

The Rain Bird 1804-SAM is designed for permanent installation in the ground, with the top of the sprinkler approximately level with the surrounding surface. The SAM model is connected through its 1/2-inch female threaded bottom inlet. A suitable flexible pipe or swing joint can be used for a flexible connection to the underground irrigation pipe.

The 1804-SAM is particularly useful at lower points within an irrigation zone. Its integrated check valve prevents water from higher sections of the lateral pipe from draining through the sprinkler after irrigation has stopped.
