Rain Bird XFF insert fittings for XFD dripline:
On-surface dripline for beds and hedges
Rain Bird XFD is a flexible, pressure-compensating dripline designed for efficient on-surface irrigation of planting beds, hedges, shrubs, ground cover and densely planted landscaped areas. The emitters are already integrated into the brown tubing, eliminating the need to install individual emitters.
This version features emitters spaced every 33 cm. Each emitter delivers 1.6 litres of water per hour, providing controlled and uniform water distribution along the dripline and directly within the plant root zone.
Pressure-compensating 1.6 l/h emitters
The integrated emitters are pressure compensating, helping maintain consistent water delivery throughout the recommended operating pressure range. This is particularly useful with longer dripline runs and installations with moderate changes in elevation.
Each emitter delivers 1.6 l/h. With emitters positioned every 33 cm, there are approximately three emitters per metre of tubing, resulting in a calculated water delivery of approximately 4.8 l/h per metre.
33 cm emitter spacing for planted areas
The 33 cm emitter spacing is particularly suitable for hedges, perennial beds, ground cover and other densely planted areas where water needs to be distributed continuously rather than delivered only to widely spaced individual plants.
The dripline can be routed along a hedge or installed in several parallel runs across a larger planting bed, allowing the irrigation layout to be adapted to the shape and planting density of the area.
Flexible 16 mm dripline
Rain Bird XFD has an outside diameter of 16.1 mm and an inside diameter of 13.6 mm. The tubing wall is 1.2 mm thick. Its flexible and kink-resistant construction allows the dripline to follow curves and irregularly shaped planting areas while reducing the number of additional fittings required.
The dual-layer construction features a brown outer layer over a black inner layer, providing resistance to UV exposure, chemicals and algae growth. The brown surface also makes the dripline less noticeable when installed on soil or mulch.
100 m coil for on-surface installation
This version is supplied as a 100 m coil and is designed as an XFD on-surface dripline. It can be laid directly on soil or mulch and secured in position with suitable tubing stakes where required.
Rain Bird XF insert fittings can be used to connect the dripline. Rain Bird designates these fittings as 17 mm XF fittings, while the actual outside diameter of the compatible XFD tubing is 16.1 mm.
Operating pressure, filtration and run length
Rain Bird specifies an operating pressure range of 0.58 to 4.1 bar for the European XFD series. Filtration to 125 microns is required for reliable operation. Maximum water temperature is approximately 38 °C, while maximum ambient temperature is approximately 52 °C.
The maximum length of an individual dripline run depends on inlet pressure, emitter spacing and emitter flow. For this 1.6 l/h version with 33 cm spacing, Rain Bird specifies a maximum lateral length of approximately 104 m at an inlet pressure of 1.0 bar. Longer runs are possible at higher inlet pressures.

Frequently asked questions about Rain Bird XFD
How much water does the dripline deliver?
Each integrated emitter delivers 1.6 litres per hour. With emitters positioned every 33 cm, the dripline delivers approximately 4.8 litres per hour for each metre of installed tubing.
Is the XFD dripline pressure compensating?
Yes. The integrated emitters are pressure compensating and are designed to maintain consistent water delivery throughout the specified operating pressure range.
What diameter is the XFD dripline?
Rain Bird XFD has an outside diameter of 16.1 mm, an inside diameter of 13.6 mm and a wall thickness of 1.2 mm.
Which fittings should I use?
Rain Bird XF insert fittings are suitable for the XFD dripline. These fittings are designated as 17 mm XF fittings even though the actual outside diameter of the XFD tubing is 16.1 mm.
Can XFD dripline be installed underground?
This XFD version is primarily designed for on-surface installation. For permanent subsurface irrigation, Rain Bird XFS with Copper Shield technology is the more suitable option because it is specifically designed for subsurface installation and protection against root intrusion.
Does the dripline require a filter?
Yes. Rain Bird specifies filtration to 125 microns for XFD dripline. Suitable filtration helps protect the integrated emitters from contamination and supports reliable long-term operation.
What is the maximum length of one dripline run?
The maximum run length depends on the available inlet pressure. At 1.0 bar, Rain Bird specifies approximately 104 m for this 1.6 l/h version with 33 cm emitter spacing. Longer runs are possible with higher inlet pressure.
