Rain Bird XFF insert fittings for XFD dripline:
On-surface dripline for landscaped areas
Rain Bird XFD is a flexible, pressure-compensating dripline designed for efficient on-surface irrigation of planting beds, hedges, shrubs, ground cover and other landscaped areas. The emitters are permanently integrated into the tubing and distribute water evenly along the dripline.
This version features emitters spaced every 33 cm with a flow rate of 2.3 litres per hour per emitter. It is particularly suitable for planted areas with higher water requirements or applications where more water needs to be delivered within a given irrigation time.
Pressure-compensating 2.3 l/h emitters
The integrated emitters are pressure compensating, helping maintain consistent water delivery throughout the recommended operating pressure range. This is particularly beneficial with longer dripline runs and installations with moderate changes in elevation.
Each emitter delivers 2.3 l/h. With emitters positioned every 33 cm, there are approximately three emitters per metre, resulting in a calculated water delivery of approximately 6.9 l/h per metre of dripline.
33 cm spacing for uniform irrigation
The 33 cm emitter spacing is well suited to hedges, perennial beds, shrubs and continuous planted areas. The relatively short distance between emitters helps create consistent moisture distribution along the installed dripline.
The tubing can be routed along a row of plants or installed in several parallel runs across larger planting beds, allowing the irrigation layout to be adapted to the size, shape and planting density of the area.
Flexible dripline with 16.1 mm outside diameter
Rain Bird XFD has an outside diameter of 16.1 mm and an inside diameter of 13.6 mm. The wall thickness is 1.2 mm. Its flexible construction allows the tubing to follow curves and irregularly shaped planting areas while reducing the number of additional fittings required.
The dual-layer tubing features a brown outer layer and a black inner layer, providing resistance to UV exposure, chemicals and algae growth. Its brown exterior also makes the dripline less noticeable when installed on soil or mulch.
100 m coil for on-surface installation
This version is supplied as a 100 m coil and is designed for on-surface installation. The dripline can be laid directly on soil or mulch and secured with suitable tubing stakes where required.
Rain Bird XF insert fittings are suitable for connecting, branching and terminating the dripline. Rain Bird designates these fittings as 17 mm XF fittings, while the compatible XFD tubing itself has an actual outside diameter of 16.1 mm.
Operating pressure and filtration
Rain Bird specifies an operating pressure range of 0.58 to 4.1 bar for XFD dripline. Filtration to 125 microns is required for reliable emitter operation. Maximum water temperature is approximately 38 °C.
The maximum length of an individual dripline run depends on inlet pressure, emitter flow and emitter spacing. Because this version delivers 2.3 l/h per emitter, it has a higher overall flow requirement than the 1.6 l/h version, which should be considered when designing longer irrigation runs.

Frequently asked questions about Rain Bird XFD
How much water does this XFD dripline deliver?
Each integrated emitter delivers 2.3 l/h. With emitters spaced every 33 cm, there are approximately three emitters per metre, resulting in a water delivery of approximately 6.9 l/h per metre.
What is the difference compared with the 1.6 l/h XFD version?
The main difference is the emitter flow rate. This version delivers 2.3 l/h instead of 1.6 l/h per emitter. With the same 33 cm emitter spacing, it therefore applies more water during the same irrigation period.
Is Rain Bird XFD pressure compensating?
Yes. The integrated emitters are pressure compensating and are designed to maintain consistent water delivery along the dripline within the specified operating range.
What diameter is the dripline?
Rain Bird XFD has an outside diameter of 16.1 mm, an inside diameter of 13.6 mm and a wall thickness of 1.2 mm.
Which fittings are compatible with XFD?
Rain Bird XF insert fittings are designed for the XFD dripline. Rain Bird designates these as 17 mm fittings even though the compatible XFD tubing has an actual outside diameter of 16.1 mm.
Can this dripline be installed underground?
This XFD version is primarily intended for on-surface installation. For permanent subsurface applications, Rain Bird XFS with Copper Shield technology is the more suitable option because it is specifically designed to protect the emitters against root intrusion.
Does XFD require filtration?
Yes. Rain Bird specifies filtration to 125 microns. Suitable filtration protects the integrated emitters from contamination and supports reliable long-term operation.
