Rain Bird XFF insert fittings for XFD dripline:
50 m dripline for on-surface irrigation
Rain Bird XFD is a flexible, pressure-compensating dripline designed for targeted irrigation of planting beds, hedges, shrubs, ground cover and other landscaped areas. The emitters are permanently integrated into the tubing and distribute water evenly along the installed dripline.
This version combines an emitter flow rate of 2.3 l/h with 33 cm emitter spacing. The 50 m coil is particularly suitable for small and medium-sized irrigation projects where a full 100 m coil is not required.
Pressure-compensating emitters with 2.3 l/h
The integrated emitters are pressure compensating. This helps provide consistent water delivery along the dripline within the specified operating pressure range, particularly on longer runs and installations with moderate elevation changes.
Each emitter delivers 2.3 litres of water per hour. With emitters positioned every 33 cm, there are approximately three emitters per metre, resulting in a calculated water delivery of approximately 6.9 l/h per metre of dripline.
33 cm spacing for uniform irrigation
The 33 cm emitter spacing provides closely positioned irrigation points. This makes the dripline particularly suitable for hedges, perennial beds, ground cover and continuously planted areas where uniform soil moisture along the tubing is desirable.
The dripline can be routed along a row of plants or installed in several parallel runs across larger planting beds. The layout can therefore be adapted to plant spacing, soil type and individual watering requirements.
Flexible dripline with 16.1 mm outside diameter
Rain Bird XFD has an outside diameter of 16.1 mm and an inside diameter of 13.6 mm. The wall thickness is 1.2 mm. Its flexible tubing construction allows the dripline to follow curves and irregularly shaped planting areas.
The dual-layer construction features a brown outer layer and a black inner layer. It provides resistance to UV exposure, chemicals and algae growth, while the brown exterior helps the tubing blend naturally with soil and mulch.
Simple on-surface installation
XFD dripline is designed primarily for on-surface irrigation and can be laid directly on soil or mulch. Suitable tubing stakes can be used to secure the dripline and maintain the required layout throughout the planting area.
Rain Bird XF insert fittings can be used for connecting, branching and terminating the dripline. Rain Bird designates these fittings as 17 mm XF fittings, while the compatible XFD tubing itself has an actual outside diameter of 16.1 mm.
Operating pressure and filtration
Rain Bird specifies an operating pressure range of 0.58 to 4.1 bar for XFD dripline. Filtration to 125 microns is required for reliable operation of the integrated emitters. Maximum water temperature is approximately 38 °C.
The maximum length of an individual dripline run depends on inlet pressure, emitter flow, emitter spacing, available water flow and elevation changes within the irrigation system.

Frequently asked questions about Rain Bird XFD
How much water does the dripline deliver per metre?
Each emitter delivers 2.3 l/h. With emitters spaced every 33 cm, there are approximately three emitters per metre, resulting in a water delivery of around 6.9 l/h per metre.
What is 33 cm emitter spacing suitable for?
This spacing is particularly suitable for hedges, perennial plants, ground cover and densely planted beds where relatively uniform moisture distribution along the dripline is required.
Is Rain Bird XFD pressure compensating?
Yes. The integrated emitters are pressure compensating and help maintain consistent water delivery along the dripline within the specified operating range.
What diameter is XFD dripline?
The dripline has an outside diameter of 16.1 mm, an inside diameter of 13.6 mm and a wall thickness of 1.2 mm.
Which fittings should I use?
Rain Bird XF insert fittings are designed for the XF dripline system. They are designated as 17 mm fittings and are compatible with XFD tubing with an actual outside diameter of 16.1 mm.
Can XFD be installed underground?
XFD is primarily designed for on-surface installation. For permanent subsurface irrigation, Rain Bird XFS with Copper Shield technology is the more suitable option because it is specifically designed to protect emitters against root intrusion.
Does the dripline require a filter?
Yes. Rain Bird specifies filtration to 125 microns. Suitable filtration helps protect the integrated emitters from contamination and supports reliable long-term operation.
What is the difference compared with the 100 m version?
With the same emitter flow and spacing, the main difference is the coil length. The 50 m version is particularly convenient for smaller irrigation projects where a full 100 m coil is not required.
