Rain Bird XFF insert fittings for XFD dripline:
On-surface dripline with 50 cm spacing
Rain Bird XFD is a flexible, pressure-compensating dripline designed for on-surface irrigation of hedges, shrubs, planting rows, beds and other landscaped areas. The emitters are permanently integrated into the tubing and deliver water directly along the installed dripline.
This version features 50 cm emitter spacing with a flow rate of 2.3 litres per hour from each emitter. The wider emitter spacing is particularly suitable for planting rows and areas where water does not need to be applied as closely together as with XFD versions featuring 33 cm emitter spacing.
Pressure-compensating 2.3 l/h emitters
The integrated emitters are pressure compensating. Within the specified operating range, this helps provide consistent water delivery along the dripline, which is particularly beneficial for longer runs and installations with moderate elevation changes.
Each emitter delivers 2.3 l/h. With an emitter every 50 cm, there are two emitters per metre of dripline, resulting in a calculated water delivery of approximately 4.6 l/h per metre.
50 cm emitter spacing for planting rows
The 50 cm emitter spacing is particularly useful for hedges, shrubs and planting rows where irrigation points can be positioned further apart. Compared with a 33 cm version, fewer emitters are installed per metre and consequently less water is delivered per metre of tubing.
The dripline can be installed directly along a row of plants or arranged in several parallel runs across larger planting areas. The layout can therefore be adapted to plant spacing, soil conditions and irrigation requirements.
Flexible dripline with 16.1 mm outside diameter
Rain Bird XFD has an outside diameter of 16.1 mm and an inside diameter of 13.6 mm. The wall thickness is 1.2 mm. Its flexible construction allows the dripline to follow curves and irregularly shaped planting areas while reducing the number of additional fittings required.
The dual-layer tubing features a brown outer layer and a black inner layer. This construction provides resistance to UV exposure, chemicals and algae growth, while the brown exterior makes the tubing less noticeable when installed on soil or mulch.
100 m coil for on-surface irrigation
This XFD version is supplied as a 100 m coil and is intended for on-surface installation. The dripline can be laid directly on soil or mulch and secured with suitable tubing stakes where required.
Rain Bird XF insert fittings can be used for connecting and branching the dripline. Rain Bird designates these fittings as 17 mm XF fittings, while the compatible XFD tubing itself has an actual outside diameter of 16.1 mm.
Operating pressure and filtration
The specified operating pressure range for Rain Bird XFD is 0.58 to 4.1 bar. Filtration to 125 microns is required to support reliable operation of the integrated emitters. Maximum water temperature is approximately 38 °C.
The maximum length of an individual dripline run depends on inlet pressure, emitter flow, emitter spacing and elevation changes. Because this version has 50 cm spacing, fewer emitters are installed per metre than with the 33 cm version, resulting in a lower overall flow requirement per metre.

Frequently asked questions about Rain Bird XFD
How much water does this dripline deliver per metre?
With emitters spaced every 50 cm, there are two emitters per metre. Each emitter delivers 2.3 l/h, resulting in approximately 4.6 l/h of water delivery per metre of dripline.
When is 50 cm emitter spacing useful?
A 50 cm spacing is particularly suitable for hedges, shrubs and planting rows where closely spaced irrigation points are not required. The ideal spacing also depends on plant spacing, soil type and water requirements.
What is the difference compared with 33 cm emitter spacing?
Both versions can use 2.3 l/h emitters. With 50 cm spacing there are two emitters per metre, delivering approximately 4.6 l/h per metre. With 33 cm spacing there are approximately three emitters per metre, increasing water delivery to around 6.9 l/h per metre.
Is Rain Bird XFD pressure compensating?
Yes. The integrated emitters are pressure compensating and help maintain consistent water delivery along the dripline within the specified operating pressure range.
What is the outside diameter of the tubing?
Rain Bird XFD has an actual outside diameter of 16.1 mm. The inside diameter is 13.6 mm and the wall thickness is 1.2 mm.
Which fittings are compatible?
Rain Bird XF insert fittings are designed for XFD dripline. Rain Bird designates these as 17 mm fittings even though the compatible XFD tubing has an actual outside diameter of 16.1 mm.
Can this XFD dripline be installed underground?
This XFD version is intended primarily for on-surface irrigation. For permanent subsurface installation, Rain Bird XFS with Copper Shield technology is the more suitable choice because it is specifically designed to protect the emitters against root intrusion.
Does the dripline require filtration?
Yes. Rain Bird specifies filtration to 125 microns. Suitable filtration helps protect the integrated emitters from contamination and supports reliable long-term operation.
