Rain Bird XFF insert fittings for XFS-CV dripline:
Subsurface dripline with integrated check valves
Rain Bird XFS-CV combines pressure-compensating subsurface drip irrigation with Copper Shield technology and integrated check valves. It is particularly suitable for lawns, planting beds, hedges, shrubs and ground cover as well as landscapes with slopes or elevation changes.
This version features a 2.3 l/h emitter flow rate, 33 cm emitter spacing and a 100 m coil. Each emitter has its own check valve, helping keep the dripline charged with water after the irrigation cycle has ended.
Check valves prevent low-point drainage
The integrated check valve is the key difference between XFS-CV and standard XFS dripline. When irrigation stops, water is retained within the tubing instead of draining through emitters located at lower elevations.
This is particularly beneficial on slopes and landscapes with elevation changes. XFS-CV can accommodate elevation differences of approximately 3 m, significantly reducing low-point drainage, puddling and overwatering at the lowest points of an irrigation zone.
Faster and more uniform irrigation
Because the dripline remains charged between irrigation cycles, the system does not need to completely refill every time irrigation starts. The emitters can therefore begin delivering water more quickly and uniformly.
This is especially beneficial for larger systems, short irrigation cycles and landscapes with elevation changes, helping improve irrigation uniformity while reducing unnecessary water loss at low points.
Copper Shield protection against root intrusion
In addition to the integrated check valves, XFS-CV features Rain Bird Copper Shield technology. A copper component at each emitter protects against root intrusion and allows the dripline to be permanently installed below the soil surface.
No additional chemicals need to be routinely added or replaced for root protection, making XFS-CV particularly suitable for permanent subsurface irrigation systems.
Pressure-compensating 2.3 l/h emitters
Each integrated emitter delivers 2.3 litres of water per hour. The pressure-compensating emitter design helps maintain consistent water delivery along the lateral within the specified operating pressure range.
With emitters positioned every 33 cm, there are approximately three emitters per metre. This results in a calculated water delivery of approximately 6.9 l/h per metre of dripline.
Ideal for lawns, planting beds and slopes
XFS-CV is suitable for subsurface irrigation of lawns as well as hedges, shrubs, ground cover and other landscaped areas. Water is delivered directly into the soil where plants need it.
The integrated check valves make XFS-CV particularly useful for slopes and landscapes with varying elevations. While conventional dripline may continue draining at lower points after irrigation stops, the check valves help retain water within the tubing.
Flexible dripline with 16.1 mm outside diameter
Rain Bird XFS-CV has an outside diameter of 16.1 mm, an inside diameter of 13.6 mm and a wall thickness of 1.2 mm. The flexible tubing material makes installation easier in straight, curved and irregularly shaped irrigation areas.
The dual-layer construction with a copper-coloured outer layer over a black inner layer provides resistance to chemicals, algae growth and UV damage. A wide emitter flow path combined with self-flushing action also improves resistance to grit and potential clogging.
Operating pressure and filtration
The operating pressure range for XFS-CV is 1.38 to 4.14 bar. The integrated check valve has an opening pressure of 1.0 bar, making sufficient inlet pressure particularly important for reliable operation.
Rain Bird specifies 120 mesh filtration, equivalent to approximately 125 microns. Maximum water temperature is 37.8 °C and maximum ambient temperature is 51.7 °C.

Frequently asked questions about Rain Bird XFS-CV
What is the difference between XFS-CV and XFS?
Both are designed for subsurface irrigation and feature Copper Shield technology for root intrusion protection. XFS-CV additionally includes a check valve in every emitter, helping keep the dripline charged after irrigation stops and preventing drainage through emitters at lower elevations.
When is XFS-CV particularly useful?
XFS-CV is especially useful on slopes and landscapes with elevation changes. The check valves are also beneficial with frequent short irrigation cycles because the dripline remains charged between cycles.
How much elevation change can the check valve accommodate?
The integrated check valve provides approximately 0.3 bar of hold-back capability. Rain Bird specifies that this allows the dripline to remain charged across elevation changes of up to approximately 3 m.
How much water does the dripline deliver?
Each emitter delivers 2.3 l/h. With emitters positioned every 33 cm, there are approximately three emitters per metre, resulting in approximately 6.9 l/h of water delivery per metre.
Can XFS-CV be installed below a lawn?
Yes. XFS-CV is suitable for subsurface lawn irrigation as well as planting beds, hedges, shrubs and ground cover. Copper Shield technology protects the emitters against root intrusion.
Why does XFS-CV require more pressure than standard XFS?
The integrated check valves must open when irrigation starts. The opening pressure is 1.0 bar, and Rain Bird specifies an operating pressure range of 1.38 to 4.14 bar for XFS-CV.
Which fittings are compatible with XFS-CV?
XFS-CV accepts Rain Bird XF dripline insert fittings and suitable 17 mm barbed insert fittings. Rain Bird XFF fittings are the appropriate fittings within the XF system.
Does XFS-CV require filtration?
Yes. Rain Bird specifies 120 mesh filtration, equivalent to approximately 125 microns. Suitable filtration helps protect the integrated emitters and check valves from contamination.
