Rain Bird RWS-M-B-1401 root watering system - 45.7 cm height

Root watering for trees and shrubs

The Rain Bird RWS-M-B-1401 is an underground root watering system designed to deliver water directly to the root zone of trees, shrubs and woody plants. Instead of applying water only at the soil surface, the system carries it deeper into the root zone, helping distribute moisture throughout the surrounding soil.

At 45.7 cm in height, the RWS-M-B-1401 is the medium-sized version of the Rain Bird RWS range. It provides greater watering depth than the compact 25.4 cm RWS Supplemental model while requiring less installation depth than the full-size 91.4 cm RWS system.

1401 bubbler delivering 0.95 l/min

The RWS-M-B-1401 is factory equipped with a Rain Bird 1401 bubbler. It delivers 0.95 l/min, corresponding to approximately 57 l/h, providing controlled water delivery directly within the root watering system.

The bubbler is positioned on a riser inside the perforated root watering system. Water is discharged inside the unit and can then move through the openings in the basket into the surrounding soil and root zone.

45.7 cm depth for targeted watering

The semi-rigid perforated basket measures 10.2 cm in diameter and 45.7 cm in length. Delivering water below ground helps direct irrigation into deeper soil layers while reducing surface losses caused by wind and evaporation.

Rain Bird states that the RWS series can achieve distribution uniformity of up to 95%. Below-ground irrigation also supports deeper and broader root development and can help discourage shallow root growth.

Durable locking grate at ground level

The top of the RWS-M-B-1401 features a 10.2 cm locking grate. When correctly installed, the grate is positioned flush with finished grade or the top of the surrounding mulch layer.

This keeps most of the irrigation system hidden below ground while maintaining access for inspection and maintenance. The locking grate also protects the internal bubbler and helps deter unauthorized access.

Factory assembled for easy installation

The RWS-M-B-1401 is supplied as a factory-assembled unit. A ½" spiral barb elbow with a ½" male NPT inlet simplifies connection to the irrigation supply line.

After installation, Rain Bird recommends filling the basket with pea gravel. In extremely hard or clay soils, additional gravel below and around the unit can improve water infiltration and root penetration. The optional Rain Bird RWS-SOCK is available for suitable soil conditions.
